A simple plan to manage your daily social media monitoring and engagement

small office with some equipments like computers, table, desk, chair. Executives very busy

It’s discouraging to put in a busy day only to realize that despite the time and effort you haven’t really accomplished much at all. Between email, IM, the phone, noise and quick questions it seems your time can easily be spent dealing and recovering from interruptions.

Did you slack off and “forget” to tweet today? What about responding in your LinkedIn groups? Keeping up with engagement on your social media platforms is critical for your overall marketing plan. . . yet the time seems to slip by, and another day is gone.

I know you may think that nobody is reading your tweets or status messages, but you are noticed; and I can guarantee you that the moment you stop (yes, even for a day), you’ll certainly be easily forgotten.

Sounds kinda harsh, but it’s a matter of the internet world.

How to keep up your social media monitoring and engagement

  1. Briefly scan Twitter: I’ll take out my phone or open up Hootsuite and glance at my Twitter stream for the past 5 minutes and if I see something interesting (which I usually do), I’ll RT it. Bam, I’ve just held over my Twitter presence for at least a couple hours.
  2. Briefly scan Facebook: Then, I’ll head over to Facebook and do the same thing, I’ll glance at my personal and business streams and when I see something interesting, I’ll share it on my Facebook page. BAM, I’ve just held over my internet presence on Facebook for at least a couple hours.
  3. Briefly scan LinkedIn Group emails: Is there something here I can respond to? Usually only one or two a day, so I can handle this quickly.
  4. Briefly scan Google+: Add a couple comments, and share some content. Then maybe a quick share of what I’m working on now.
  5. Read a blog post or two: I have several blogs that I follow on a daily basis, so I’ll pull up Google Reader, read a blog or two, comment on one or two and then BAM. I’ve just held over my blogger presence for, well, the day.

I try to take a break from what I’m doing every couple hours and pick one or two of these items. Then get up and walk around, a little or do something else for a few minutes. Then it’s back to work!

The point is, as long as you continue to touch your social media platforms once or twice a day, you’re remaining engaged. And on days when we’re jammed with work, it’s a good opportunity to open our eyes to what other folks in other places are doing or thinking about.
